CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS FLIP FLOP ON TAX POLICY

New York’s 3rd Congressional District, August 13, 2020 – Congressional Democrats, led by Representative Tom Suozzi (D., N.Y.), are pushing to restore the unlimited SALT Deduction in the Coronavirus-Relief Bill. While this move may certainly benefit property owning New Yorkers, this move by Suozzi deserves a closer look.

Suozzi knows a thing or two about property taxes. While he served as Nassau County Executive, he raised property taxes by 23%, distinguishing Nassau as the highest taxed county in the nation. Now Suozzi wants to change the federal tax code to blunt the effect of his legacy of high property taxes for residents of Nassau County before an election.  This move is classic Washington: hurt your constituents on one hand while pretending to help them on the other. Congressional Democrats, and particularly Suozzi, do not deserve credit for cleaning up a mess they made.
